Month(s?) at PBD
Hey everyone!
Hoping everybody is doing well and learning lots at their internships! Business is still moving fast at Perry Becker, though not much has changed from my workflow. I'm still working on the port in Mexico, but have also been added to a project called Calypso Cove, a cruise destination located in the Bahamas. While the design of the destination was done by the principal of the firm, I have worked with him in getting his design into AutoCAD to create more accurate linework to base his designs on. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but being in the same room as a professional landscape architect who has decades of experince and watching them work and hearing their process is pretty amamzing. Dave Perry (the principal that I've been working with) will design something and immediately know the capacity/spatial calculations without having to bring it into AutoCAD or even whipping out a calculator. It's pretty amazaing to bear witness to. The clients that we are working for on Calypso have a large venue coming up called Sea Trade, which is a huge convention for cruise companies and destination designers to showcase what is new and fresh in the industry. Because of Sea Trade though, the clients have asked for a fully rendered model and advertisement video to show off at Sea Trade, so the last week has been moving all CAD linework into Sketchup. Sketchup definitely has its drawbacks, but if you are trying to model quickly and efficiently at only face value (not making any solid objects), then Sketchup is such a good program in my opinion. Having access to hundreds of premade models from 3D Warehouse is such a useful tool, and the extensions that can make your workflow even faster allow for seamless model to be made EXTREMELY quickly. As you can see, I am still a big Sketchup stand, and I am perfectly fine with dying on that hill.
Living in Florida is still pretty chill. I've gotten more in beach volleyball recently, which is a bit more difficult than indoor but equally as fun! My time not spent playing beach volleyball has been spent resort hopping around Disney property, doing mostly research. When I say research, I usually mean grabbing a drink from one of the resort bars and walking around the property, taking photos of everything from lighting fixtures to planting palletes. I'm hoping to have a cool library of precendents to use for our projects in 5th year by the end of the spring. Not much else to report though, so good luck to everyone and hope everybody is still well and safe!
