'Tis the season

Vanderbilt Beach, Naples

Florida is in busy season right now. The snowbirds, northerns that want to get away from the snow/cold weather up north come down south for a few months, are noticeable with how busy SWF has been. Busy season will be over late March/April. So, I will have a few months to be able to get around SWF without all the traffic.

I went around the office a few weeks ago asking for everybody's favorite restaurant between Tampa and Naples. So, I have been trying a few of those places on the weekend. My coworker graduated from LSU in 2013. We went to a restaurant two Fridays ago and saw the sunset from a hotel the firm designed the landscape. I have been enjoying the firm. The firm is mostly an engineering firm, but land planning, land development, environmental assessments/permit compliance, construction engineering and inspection, ecological/environmental consulting, electrical engineering, GIS, landscape architecture, surveying/mapping, stormwater management, transportation design, utilities, water quality studies, and water supply. My boss told me I will be able to shadow most of the different services the firm offers. I actually, shadowed the land planning department a few weeks back. My day started off with me following the principal of the landscape architecture and land planning departments working at her Collier County job, which she does on Tuesday and Thursday. She introduced me to some of her coworkers, one even went to LSU a while back for landscape architecture. She remembers Max and Charles. That was the county level. Then we went to RSW, Florida's Southwest International Airport. The airport is redoing Fort Myer's smaller airport, Page Field. That was the federal level. Finally we ended the day at a community meeting, Lee Health is adding a major hospital close to the neighborhood. That was the community level.

My company does team building events, last weekend was the Fun Shoot. Travis in utilities went 50/50 on clays.

I finished my first project last week. I was in charge of reworking a project for Pasco County, north of Tampa. The project was 3 miles on Ridge Road, a county road. The project was originally completed in 2012, and 2015, but never got off the county desk. The project had to be reworked in 2023, when the county wanted to actually go through with the project, but the in mean time the codes and ordinances changed. Now the FDOT code is 20' buffers on major roads. So that leaves only a few islands that have 40'+ wide neutral grounds.

I ran in a race on Sunday in Punta Gorda, 30 minutes north of Fort Myers. I finished third for my age group. The beaches are out of this world. The beaches in the panhandle of Florida do not compare to the beaches in SWF, Southwest Florida.

  1. You're telling me that your firm went out team-building by shooting shotguns? If so, serious respect
